Your cast-on number is determined by your stitch gauge and primary stitch count, which you calculated in Pt 2 of this tutorial. Once you have your primary stitch count, you use the reference charts in Pt 11 to fill in all the blanks within the pattern for your custom fit (including the cast-on number). Throughout the tutorial, you will find lines like this _______, followed by a chart reference pointing you to the exact number you need. I hope this clears things up.
